I had forgotten this was up next when I made my picture and theme for the summer. Yay?
If you have a chance to get a copy of A Season of Hope, that is the book that this episode is based in part off of.
I am busy and flipping between houses and computers, so my apologies for being a bit late with this post.

Date: 2011-06-19 07:09 pm (UTC)Amy felt as if everything was happening in slow motion. As she gazed into the mare's pain filled eyes, she could see Scott check her pulse again, reach into his bag and took out a bolt pistol.
"Hey, wait a minute," Brad objected, walking forward. "You can't just shoot it."
"Look, Dad." Ty left Jack's side and reached out to put a hand on his father's arm. "Why don't you go in and get yourself something to drink? You've done a great job here so far."
Brad stared at Ty like he suddenly didn't know who he was. "What do you mean, 'great job'? Don't talk to me like I'm some kid," Brad scolded. But Ty didn't pull away.
"It's the kindest thing we can do for her. She's suffering." Ty's voice was even and honest. "She's going to die. If we leave her here, it will be a very painful death."
Brad shook his head as if he couldn't accept what Ty was saying. The palomino groaned again and closed her eyes. Brad flinched. "I'm staying," he said stubbornly. "I'm not leaving her now." He dropped down on the ground beside the palomino and placed his hand gently on her cheek.
"Amy," Scott looked directly at her, his eyes sympathetic. "Can you help Brad hold her head for me?"
Amy couldn't speak. Her mouth was completely dry, but she knew what Ty was true. It was the one last act of kindness that could be shown toward her. I wonder if she's known any other in her life, Amy thought, brushing her hand lightly down the mare's nose before taking hold of the lead line.
Her heart thudded painfully as Scott placed the bolt pistol against the palomino's forehead. The mare's eyelids flickered open and shut again as she let out a heavy sigh. Amy looked up at Brad's pale face and glanced away as Scott pulled the trigger. There was a muffled thud, the mare jerked just once, and then everything was still.
