April Challenge: April Showers
Apr. 9th, 2011 05:20 pmI don't have a unique for Heartland banner for this one, but I'm going to put up a challenge anyway, before the month gets away from me again.

Most of us have heard the phrase, April Showers Bring May Flowers.
Okay, sure. Flowers.
But what else?
I wrote a story which gave a new twist to rain and everything for me, but how about we look at the effect rain has on a relationship? On a family? On a farm?
Anything to do with rain and Heartland is welcome. :)

Amy's life is always the horses, that's very true. I come to the show from the books first, and the relationship she had with Ty was a different one, a closer one. Ty worked with her mom for a long time, admired her and wanted to work with horses like Marion did. Both he and Amy sought to be like her, and that shared bond and love of horses brought them close together. They shared insights into the horses and treatments and had more than a teenage romance. I sometimes feel that the treatment they got on the show cheapened their relationsip, especially the will-they won't-they that destroys a good many shows in my opinion.
Amy's a strong character, and it's good to see a positive role model out there for a change. She's not perfect, but she also doesn't have the usual characteristics of a teenage female lead. The connection to nature sets her apart, as do her strong family ties.
Rain (or lack of rain) can make or break a farm or ranch. I'm reminded of Skylark now, and it does make me wonder how Heartland would handle a similar situation.

As far as Heartland goes, I discovered it this year, but I'd already read most of the books. It was funny. My mother had gotten them for my younger sister, and I thought "another stupid horse/animal book" when I first saw it. Eventually, though, I picked up the book again, started reading, and then I collected the books in English and French, up until the "special edition" where Amy and Ty broke up.
I did start watching the show because of the books. I have seen that they'll air some of the earlier episodes on more local channels, but I'm also in the same boat. I have to download the eps to watch them.
It is a very interesting concept. I love the cinematography.
