Character Discussion: Soraya
May. 13th, 2011 11:11 amI thought it might be interesting to start with a bit on a more... minor character and see how the discussion went before delving into the bigger roles on the show. Amy should be a tough one.
Quick Rundown:
Soraya (television)
Relationships: family:mother, not been seen since season one; friends: Ashley, Amy; significant other: Chase, now over
Employment/Interests: manages mother's store/restaurant, business school student, manages dude ranch (?)
Personality: fairly serious, responsible, though not without a tendency to be a dreamer/too trusting with men
Strengths: good business sense
Weaknesses: attracted to guys who are not interested in her or not faithful to her
What season five holds? : Okay, I have to wonder if we'll see Soraya at all in season five. Her character seemed badly used in season four. She could very well end up written as moving away for school, and we'll never see her again, just like we never see her mother.
Soraya (books)
Relationships: family:parents, mentioned but never seen; Amy, Ty, Ben, Matt; boyfriend: Matt, eventually
Employment/Interests: loves horses but can't own one so she's always at Heartland, acting, boys
Personality: a bit of a dreamer, lost in her own world a lot
Strengths: loyal, supportive friend
Weaknesses: a tendency to think too much about boys/her own problems
What life after the books holds?: Soraya went off to a performing arts school and was probably going to pursue acting. Whether or not she ever made it is debatable. My take on it was that she had a few small roles, never got big, and broke up with Matt due to the different natures of their careers.
If book Soraya was television Soraya, what would season five hold?: Well, we'd probably be seeing her working on trying to become an actress, an occasional performance or visit, but she'd definitely only be a guest star that Amy might mention or talk to off-screen, if they remembered her at all.
Any other thoughts?
Want to cut/paste my little rundown and add to it or change it?
We do know very little about Soraya, but everyone's impressions are a bit different. Maybe we can fill in some of the blanks?

That's an interesting point about Scott and Soraya. I didn't really think about it like that, but they do seem comfortable together. Jack and Lou would probably know and like Soraya more than we've seen, but since Soraya's basically been relegated to the diner of late, we barely see her interacting with anyone, except with the people that work there, and that does not end well, as you said.
If she was more like the book version, then she would be at Heartland a lot more, so she would know Caleb and Ty from that, but as it is, none of them know each other well.
